Proverbs 4:4

“Then he taught me and said to me,

‘Let your heart hold fast my words;

Keep my commandments and live.’”

Q: What does God call us to do with His commandments? Why does this give us life?

To hold fast to His words and keep His commandments. Like a tree planted by a stream of water, God’s word replenishes our soul; without keeping His commandments, we are like a tree in the desert.

Psalm 119:11

“Your word I have treasured in my heart,

That I may not sin against You.”

Q: According to this verse, what must we do in order to obey God? What does it mean to treasure God’s Word in our heart?

We must treasure His Word; this means to dwell on it, meditate on it and thank God for it.

Matthew 7:21“Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter.”

Q: Why is it so important to obey God, our Father in Heaven?

Obedience shows our love for God run deeps. Faith and love for God is our salvation.

John 15:14 – “ You are My friends if you do what I command you.”

Q: What are some areas of your life that you are not obeying God?

Example: “I have too many electronic idols; my time on the internet or on phone far outweigh the amount of time I spend in the Word, and often, those times are not pure.”

Paul

Romans 6:14“For sin shall not be master over you, for you are not under law but under grace.”

Q: If you are not obeying God, what are you being mastered by? How does that make you feel?

Example: “Sin masters me when I’m being disobedient to Christ. Right now, my desire to fit in and be liked by others has control over me. This makes me feel dejected and ashamed.”

Peter

1 Peter 1:14“As obedient children, do not be conformed to the former lusts which were yours in your ignorance…”

Q: What are former areas of your life that you have given over to God? What is one way in which you can obey God this week?

Example: “I have given God my purity and my dating life. One way I can obey is by not using profanity like the others on my team.”

APPLICATION: How do these passages relate to me today? What changes do they bring to my life?

LOCKER ROOM: Is there anything this week that you have been enslaved to, and how we can help you?
