A New Creation

Mark these Key Words: Death, Reborn, Renewed, Transform

Just as a caterpillar weaves itself into a cocoon and dies inside his self-made coffin, a truly converted follower dies to his “old self.” Likewise, as the DNA of the caterpillar deteriorates and reconstructs itself into the DNA of a majestic butterfly, so the new believer becomes a brand new creation in Christ.

2 Corinthians 5:17

“Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.”

What is a “new creation?”

Compare your personal experience as a “new creation in Christ.”

Colossians 3:5-10

“Therefore consider the members of your earthly body as dead to immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed, which amounts to idolatry. For it is because of these things that the wrath of God will come upon the sons of disobedience, and in them you also once walked, when you were living in them. But now you also, put them all aside: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and abusive speech from your mouth. Do not lie to one another, since you laid aside the old self with its evil practices, and have put on the new self who is being renewed to a true knowledge according to the image of the One who created him.”

What does it mean to “consider your earthly body as “dead to sin”?

When Paul says in verse 8, “put them all aside” specifically how is God talking to you?

What does it mean to “lay aside the old self”?

How are you specifically being urged by the Holy Spirit to “put on the new self”?

Romans 6:1-11

“What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin so that grace may increase? May it never be! How shall we who  died to sin still live in it? Or do you know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death? Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life. For if we have become united with Him in the likeness of His death, certainly we shall also be in the likeness of His resurrection, knowing this, that our old self was crucified with Him, in order that our body of sin might be done away with, so that we would no longer be slaves to sin; for he who has died is freed from sin. Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him, knowing that Christ, having been raised from the dead, is never to die again; death no longer is master over Him. For the death that He died, He died to sin once for all; but the life that He lives, He lives to God. Even so consider yourselves to be dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus.”

Describe the “slap in the face” this is to Jesus on the Cross.

What does it mean to you to be “dead to sin”?

What sins have you “died to” since you became fully surrendered to Jesus?

After this study, how do you plan to “walk in the rewards of life”? (Be as specific, clear and personal in your answer as possible.)

Can you outline at least one measurable new goal you have set for yourself in this study?
