The Holy Spirit
Mark These Key Words: Jesus God Holy Spirit
Understanding His Comfort
John 14:16 & 17
“I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever; that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you and will be in you.”
The word “Helper” is the Greek word “PARAKLETE” that means “one who is called alongside.” The context in this passage is the way a commanding General would “speak a word of bravery” to a defeated army to encourage his army to “go back into battle.”
How has the Holy Spirit done this for you?
“The Holy Spirit can and will help walk alongside you in any situation when we give our life to the Lord and pray that the Spirit helps us in every situation of life.”
Understanding His Power
Acts 1:8
“but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth.”
The Greek word for power is “Dunimos” from which we get the word dynamite. However, in this passage the context is more like the generator of a car that continues to provide power to operate the entire automobile.
Describe how the Holy Spirit empowers you to share your faith.
“The Holy Spirit can and will empower you to share your faith by making your more bold than you ever thought you could be previously when you pray for the Spirit’s power in your life.
Understanding His Personality (Humility) And His Role in The Trinity
John 16:13-15
“But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come. He will glorify My for He will take of Mine and will disclose it to you. All things that the Father has are Mine; therefore I said that He takes of Mine and will disclose it to you.”
What is Jesus communicating in this passage about the Holy Spirit’s role in The Trinity?
“The Holy Spirit humbles Himself in the Trinity and communicates only what Jesus wants to disclose to us.”
Understanding His Teaching
John 14:26
“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you.”
John 16:8-10
“And He, when He comes, will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment; concerning sin, because they do not believe in Me; concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father and you no longer see Me;”
What do you hear these two passages saying?
“The Holy Spirit will teach us all things that we do not know. Since we did not know Jesus before we became a Christian, God will help us see more of Christ and become convicted of our sin and unrighteousness.”
How is the Holy Spirit accomplishing this ministry of conviction, righteousness, judgement and truth in your life?
“The Holy Spirit is accomplishing these ministries in our life by living inside of us and convicting our hearts of sin that we have committed.”
Understanding the Trinity
Romans 8:9-11
“However, you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him. If Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, yet the spirit is alive because of righteousness. But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.”
John 14:20
In that day you will know that I am in My Father, and you in Me, and I in you.”
Some cults teach that there is no Trinity in the bible. How do these verses refute that false teaching?
“In both passages God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit are mentioned. In Romans 8, the Trinity is mentioned in the last verse when it says, “He [God] who raised…” In John 14, Jesus is in the Father and Spirit is in you (“I in you”).”
How do you describe The Trinity according to scripture?
“The Trinity is three entities in one person, the Godhead.”
Walking in Spirit
Ephesians 4:30
“Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.”
1 Thessalonians 5:19
“Do not quench the Spirit.” What does scripture mean when it exhorts you not to “grieve” the Spirit?
“This means do not sadden or push away the Spirit from your life.”
What does scripture mean when it exhorts you not to “quench” the Spirit?
“The Holy Spirit wants to actively work in you. To quench the Holy Spirit means to make the Holy Spirit unable to act in your life.”
How do you describe The Trinity according to scripture?
“Three entities in one person, the Godhead. Though imperfect, the Trinity is often illustrated by a three leaf clover (one leaf with three entities) and water (solid, liquid, and gas, but all water).”
APPLICATION: How do these passages relate to me today? What changes does it bring to my life?
LOCKER ROOM: Have you been grieving or quenching the Spirit? How can you begin to “walk in the Spirit” now?
MEMORY VERSE: John 14:20
