Culture’s Character

Day 1- CULTURE’S CONFIDENCE

Culture: (n) the beliefs, customs, arts, etc., of a particular society, group, place, or time.
Write down what the culture around you believes to be true right now.
Make sure you understand the definition of the word “culture” defined in this Bible study. In this study, the word “culture” is not used to reference a person’s “cultural background.” You have a history and a culture that God has used to make you who you are. God values those things and you can use them to share Him with others.
The word “culture” will be used to represent all the different beliefs the world promotes, what the world thinks to be true or not true, and all the things the world values.

Day 2- THE CULTURE ROLLER COASTER

Today, you are going to do an exercise that might need your parent’s or grandparent’s help. Look back at your list from Day 1 of where you wrote what culture believes to be true.
Go to your parents and ask them what culture believed to be true ten years ago. Let them look at your list to help them see what you think culture believes now.
Go to your grandparents and ask them what culture believed to be true 50 years ago.
Have your parents help you Google the early 1900s. Write down what the world was like 100 years ago. Does culture stay the same or does it change?
Read Hebrews 13:8 and Malachi 3:6. Does the Lord stay the same or does He change?
If God stays the same no matter what happens in culture, should you have more confidence in God or culture? How can you have more confidence in God?

Day 3- WHAT CULTURE VALUES

The Bible tells us that God sees things differently than the world does. Grab a piece of paper and make two different columns. At the top of one column write “God.” At the top of the second write “Culture.” Read the verses and write down how God is different than culture.
1 Samuel 16: 7 – What does God look at?
1 John 2:17 – Does God or the world last?
Colossians 3:23 – Who does God want you to please? Who does culture want you to please?
Look back at the list. Does God or culture sound more appealing to follow?

Day 4- THE RESULTS OF CULTURE

Culture will encourage you to only look at “right now” to make your decision. “Fix it now”… “It feels good now”… “It’s fun right now”… “You will succeed now” are just examples of the world’s advice. What God asks you to do now has your future in mind. How can you stay focused on what God asks you to do instead of what culture encourages?

Day 5- Read Galatians 5:18-22

Do you have more confidence in God or the world?

GITVE IT A TRY!

After reading Galatians, do you think you look more like the culture of the world or God? What are some things you can do to look more like Jesus?
