2 Timothy 3:10-17

P’s and Q’s : II Timothy 3:10-17

“Now you followed my teaching, conduct, purpose, faith, patience, love, perseverance…”

(verse 10)

  • To follow Paul and his teachings was to follow a man who gave his everything to follow Jesus as closely as he possibly could. This verse mentions seven aspects of Paul’s life. Name them.

1.Teaching 2.Conduct 3.Purpose 4.Faith 5.Love 6.Patience 7.Perseverance

“…persecutions, and sufferings, such as happened to me at Antioch, at Iconium and at Lystra; what persecutions I endured, and out of them all the Lord rescued me!” (verse 11)

  • Today, Paul’s life and teachings are found in his 13 or 14 letters in the New Testament. The above seven aspects of his life are found in these letters. Paul said, “imitate me as I imitate Christ.” How does studying Paul draw you closer to Jesus?

Because Paul was imitating Jesus, we are able to trust and follow Paul’s example.

“…persecutions, and sufferings, such as happened to me at Antioch, at Iconium and at Lystra; what persecutions I endured, and out of them all the Lord rescued me! Indeed, all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will be persecuted.” (verses 11-12)

  • What does this promise say to you?

God is faithful to rescue us from the persecutions that we will endure for our lifetime.

How do you “naturally” react to this statement?

______________________________________________________________________________________________

How do you “spiritually” react to it?

______________________________________________________________________________________________

What’s the difference and why?

Having hope in Christ Jesus my Savior means that I can look past suffering on earth and endure it because of the hope and eternal life I have through Him.

  • Note also Romans 5:3-5, “And not only this, but we also exult in our tribulations, knowing that tribulation brings about perseverance; and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope; and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.”

How does a “spiritual response” to pain, suffering and disappointment bring positive results to your life?

We rejoice because through our trials we will increase in perseverance, character and hope.

“You, however, continue in the things you have learned and become convinced of, knowing from whom you have learned them…” (verse 14)

  • What does it mean to “continue in what you have learned scripturally?”

Always continue to pursue Jesus through time in the Word, and use what you learn to live your life as a light of God.

  • Name the people who have taught you the most about Jesus and His Word and the #1 thing each has taught you.

  2. ____________________________________________________________________________________
  3. ____________________________________________________________________________________

(Have you texted or called them and thanked them lately?)

“…and that from childhood you have known the sacred writings which are able to give you the wisdom that leads to salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.” (verses 15-17)

  • “Inspired by God” is from the Greek word Theopneustos, which literally means “God breathed.” What does that say about the Bible?

If it is from God, we know that it can be trusted and is essential to our lives.

  • When it says “all” scripture is inspired, what is that term referring to?

The old AND new testaments – the entire Bible is God-breathed.

  • Over 2300 times in other places in scripture, the Bible self proclaims to be God’s spoken Word. In light of that, how should you regard the scriptures when you read them?

Holy – they are inspired by God for His glory and for our benefit.

  • Write about the following terms, as used to describe the purpose of scripture:

Training: We are taught by God’s Word.

Reproof: We are exposed to our shortcomings.

Correction: We are straightened out.

Training in righteousness: We are trained to reach full potential, according to what is right in the eyes of the Lord.Equipping you adequately for every good work:We are made suitable for every deed we are entrusted with.
